Travel Information

General:

  • Drink plenty of water as the desert heat is very drying

  • Haggling is the norm with vendors and taxis. Don't be hestitant - it's just a friendly negotiation on price where you both playfully mock each other's offers. If the seller's price is still more than you want to pay, just say no, and walk away slowly - chances are they'll run after you to accept your last offer. Better a low offer than none at all!

  • I found the people to be very friendly, and eager to learn English. Some may even engage you in conversation just to practice speaking the language.

  • Many hotels have metal detectors at the entrance

  • (women) Dress modestly; don't bare your midriff. Lightweight, loose cotton clothing is best.

  • Egyptian money is only in bills, so be careful not to confuse a pound note with a piastre note - they look similar

  • Pack a small flashlight. This will come in handy when exploring temple passageways.

  • If you're staying in Cairo, be aware this city is NOISY! Request a room on a higher floor, or not facing a street. Packing earplugs is a good idea, also, if you're a light sleeper.

  • Getting around Cairo, taxi is the easiest. Just haggle the amount beforehand.

Siteseeing:

  • The Pyramids: Arrive at the site early (definitely before 9am); the tour buses arrive between 9-10am and then the site is packed. If you get there early you’ll almost have the pyramids to yourself. I did this and I got to spend time alone in the King’s Chamber – a very powerful experience.

  • The Pyramids: The site is swarming with vendors selling their wares and men on camels trying to sell you rides. They can be quite persistent in trying to get your attention! Just reply with "la shukran" (no thank you).

  • Cairo: Visit Cairo Tower for beautiful panoramic views

  • Cairo: Khan-al-Kalili is the bazaar where you can find almost anything

  • Tombs: Be aware photography is not permitted, and you'll most likely have to check your video camera before entering
